On Thursday, June 5, 2008, Phyllis Gotlieb was presented the first SF Canada Lifetime Achievement Award at a reception at the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy in Toronto, in recognition of an outstanding and groundbreaking body of work in science fiction.
Ms. Gotlieb, 82, of Toronto is considered to be one of the founders of contemporary Canadian science fiction and has been a prominent voice in the field for over four decades.Read more
On May 8th, Kenneth Oppel's novel Darkwing won a Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children's Book Award in the category of YA/Middle Reader.
Darkwing is also shortlisted for a Sunburst.
Nalo Hopkinson's 2007 novel The New Moon's Arms (Warner) won the Aurora Award for Best Long-Form Work in English on May 18th at KeyCon 25 in Winnipeg. The full list of Aurora finalists and winners is here.
New Brunswick author K.V. Johansen's YA novel Nightwalker: The Warlocks of Talverdin (Orca Books) received the Ann Connor Brimer Award for Children's Literature at the 2008 Atlantic Book Awards. The ceremony was held in Dartmouth, NS on May 12th.
The final ballot for the 2008 Aurora Awards was announced March 27.
Deadline for receipt of ballots is 7 May; the awards will be handed out at KeyCon 25 (hosting Canvention 28), which takes place from May 16–19 in Winnipeg.
