The Sunburst 2025 Longlist

The Sunburst Award Society is pleased to announce the longlist for the 2025 Award. We are delighted that the longlist highlights the diversity, quality, and scope of contemporary Canadian literature of the fantastic published in 2024.

The 10 longlisted books:

Lubrin, Canisia — Code Noir (Alfred A. Knopf Canada)
Oliviera, Anthony — Dayspring (Strange Light)
O'Neill, Heather — The Capital of Dreams (HarperCollins)
Sawyer, Robert J. — The Downloaded (Shadowpaw Press)
Smith, Clayton B. — A Seal of Salvage (Breakwater Books)

The jurors for the 2025 Award are distinguished authors Natalee Caple, Geoff Ryman,and Lorina Stephens. 78 books were submitted for consideration for the 2025 Award.

The Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Literature of the Fantastic is active again after a four-year hiatus. Since its inception in 2001, the award has increased the recognition of works of Canadian speculative literature and honoured deserving books through its prestigious awards program.Over 225 works have been acknowledged for their contribution to the arts in Canada, and 38 outstanding authors have also benefited from monetary recognition.

The Sunburst Award shortlist will be announced in July. The winner of the $3,000 award will be announced in the fall. Visit sunburstaward.org for more information.
